Beijing 2024: BYD Ocean-M Concept – EV hatchback with RWD; The production version launches this year
BYD showed off its new Ocean-M concept at the ongoing Auto China show in Beijing, introducing the production car which is said to be launched in the third quarter of this year. The sporty looking hatchback seems to be the company’s answer to the Volkswagen ID.3and is expected to be located between Dolphin and Seal.
Ocean-M looks powerful with prominent bumper trim around the front air intake as well as an electrically adjustable bezel on the bonnet. The sides have Lamborghini-style wheels, cameras instead of traditional mirrors as well as large side skirts, the last of which continues to meet the large diffuser at the rear.
The split roof spoiler further emphasizes the concept’s sporty aesthetic. The body kit is certainly impressive to look at but there’s a chance it won’t make it to the production car or it may be offered as an option. There is currently no interior visible, as evident by the darkened windows.
At the moment, details about the powertrain are limited, but it is said that the Ocean-M will be built on the new BYD platform (called e-Platform 4.0) and use a second generation Blade battery. The company’s two launched this year. The Blade 2.0 battery is said to have a range of up to 1,000 km and has 25% higher energy density than the Blade 1.0 battery used in current BYD models such as the Seal, Dolphin and Atto.
Chinese media said the Ocean-M will have rear-wheel drive and optional 4-wheel drive. BYD officials have provided an estimated price for the production of the Ocean-M, said to be between 150,000 and 200,000 yuan (about RM99k and RM131k).
