Battery supplier Tesla reaches for the sky with new technology

Major battery supplier CATL has launched a new battery that it says is energy dense enough to work for use in passenger aircraft.

The battery, which is expected to go into mass production later this year, has an energy density of 500Wh/kg.

CATL will be one of the first companies to mass produce batteries with energy densities of 500Wh/kg or more. A US-based company, Argonne has announced their new battery technology that will have a capacity of 1200Wh/kg but is not ready for mass production yet.

For reference, Tesla’s new 4680 cell battery has an energy density rating of 272-296Wh/kg, which is considered very high.

The brand said: “CATL is working with partners in the development of electric passenger aircraft and practices aviation-grade standards and testing to the highest quality and safety requirements. air.

The company calls it a “concentrated battery” and says it has technology that can improve the performance of cells and deliver excellent charging and discharging performance.

Its lightweight profile and new battery technology will usher in “a new wave of electrification possibilities with a focus on high levels of safety,” the company said.

CATL has confirmed that an automotive version of the battery technology is currently in development and will begin production later this year.

It looks like CATL may have a plan to tackle more than just the aviation and automotive industries as the company says “the launch of the condenser battery will usher in a global era of electrification for road transport.” sea, land and air”.

The Chinese battery maker is responsible for supplying batteries to automakers like Tesla and Geely.

Recently CATL announced it is partnering with Chinese vehicle maker Chery to launch the first sodium-ion battery that will feature in the automaker’s future lineup.
