Barry: Anthony Carrigan and Michael Irby on Hank .’s ‘Heartbreaking’ Decision

transport: I like to go astray. You think Hank is stressed out because Barry is going to come kill him, but what he’s really stressed about is the plan to take all of these guys down in this truly terrible way. When I read it, I was really shocked. I hope that people will enjoy it, even if it feels like a crazy kick.

With the time jump revealed at the end of the episode, we won’t see an immediate period of grief for Hank, but how will this change him in the future?

transport: One of the key things that will hint to the audience where Hank is going from there is a very personal moment with Hank after Cristobal makes the choice to leave, and Hank basically goes ahead. He has that moment where the overwhelming pain inside of him comes down, and when you go down the road of repressing your emotions, you just can’t stop doing it.

I recently heard Bill talk about the show, and here’s a direct quote I’d like to pass on to you: “Michael Irby is just an asshole.” Michael, you won’t be in the last few episodes, but it’s not a bad way to go out.

Irby: Hey, man, that’s a great way to get out. I’ve dealt with a lot of tough guys in my career and I’ve always been a funny guy. When I went back to theater school, I really thought that would be what I was going to do. And, after 20 years, someone saw it. Bill saw it, our lovely casting director saw it and they allowed me to stand in this other dimension and take in this different light..

Any final words on CristoHo?

transport: I need to repeat what Bill said. Michael Irby is easily one of the most amazing, talented actors I’ve had the opportunity to work with and found this truly magical bond between the two of us. After that scene, we were both heartbroken over it, but we looked at each other and understood that this is why we did it.

Irby: Oh, brother, I’m blushing. Thank you, thank you, thank you. And you know that feeling is mutual. When you show up as a guest star, you’re not sure what your place on the show is, and from the moment I got there, it opened up arms.

I jumped down the Reddit rabbit hole, and I said, “Oh my god.” i feel like Sally’s Field. Like, “They love us, they really love us.” [Laughs.] I don’t know where that came from, and then I had to re-watch some episodes. It started at the volleyball game [in season two]. These little seeds were starting to grow, and then Bill would pour water on them, and we would shine a light on them, and they grew and we came here. So I think the fans also created this love story, because everyone believed in it, and it was fun. And Anthony, my god, you bring out the best. And I don’t know where, I don’t know how, but I really hope we get a chance to do this again.

transport: Possibly an hour-long indie Dave & Buster TV special.

Irby: Best place on earth! Let them on the horns.
