Barcelona activates fourth financial leverage in an attempt to sign a new contract

Barcelona sold an additional 24.5% stake in Barca Studios to Orpheus Media for 100 million euros to register all their new signings for the match with Rayo Vallecano.

Barca still have seven unregistered players for the first game of the season, but sources say they hope the situation can now be resolved.

LaLiga will review the documents to see everyone, including the signing of 45 million euros Robert lewandowskican now be registered.

It’s possible Barca still need to slightly lower their wage bill to make sure everyone is ready to face Rayo, but that could be done through an adjustment. Gerard Piquesalary, with advanced stage talks.

That is the fourth “financial leverage” that Barca has pulled this summer. They previously sold a 24.5% stake in Barca Studios to Socios.com and sold 25% of their domestic TV rights to Sixth Street over 25 years in two separate deals worth more than 500 million euros.

Barca had hoped the deals with Socios.com and Sixth Street would allow them to name all the players who signed in the transfer window with LaLiga.

They are in talks with GDA Luma to sell an additional 24.5% stake in Barca Studios, but as negotiations stall, they must look elsewhere this week.

Orpheus Media is owned by Catalan businessman Jaume Roures, who also helped Barca president Joan Laporta secure a place in the club’s presidency last March. The Catalan club spent more than 150 million euros on Lewandowski, Raphinha and Jules Koundewhile Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen arrived by free transfer.

Meanwhile, Sergi Roberto and Ousmane Dembele signed a new contract, but no deal has not been ratified by the Spanish league.

Therefore, with one day left before the first match of the season, Barca have up to 7 unregistered players.

It was a similar scenario last year when Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia signed up on the eve of the campaign after Pique accepted a pay cut.

A source from the federation confirmed to ESPN that the three pull levers so far will allow Barca to sign some of those seven players, though who and how much will depend on the combination.

A club source said Barca’s preference is to always be able to register all the players at once. There is an optimism that will now be possible and, in addition to the deal with Roures, ongoing negotiations with Pique and Sergio Busquets further cutting wages to create wage space.

Barca must comply with LaLiga’s spending limit. That is – 144 million euros at the end of last season, the only negative cap in Spain, but after the sale of the property this summer, it will increase significantly for the new campaign.

Barca Studios is the club’s in-house production company but is also branching out and Blaugrana said the deal with Socios.com earlier this month will also “accelerate the club’s audiovisual, blockchain, NFT and Web.3 strategy.”
