Backscatter publishes review of Olympus OM-D E-M10 IV

If you can’t remember the last time someone released a compact camera, we can’t blame you—smartphones have made compact cameras obsolete. Luckily, those starting to take pictures underwater still have a few options—most notably Olympus TG-6—but there is a very compelling argument to jump straight into a entry-level mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera.

A great option is Olympus OM-D E-M10 IV (like the TG-6, now made by OM System), in the fourth version boasts a 20MP Micro Four Thirds sensor, continuous shooting (with AF) at a respectable 4.5fps and recording both 4K/30p and 1080/60p videos. An incredibly impressive camera for just $700, it’s a camera that really captured the imaginations of the Backscatter team—and who captured much different devices, so they can appreciate what you get for the money.

In fact, Backscatter thinks that when you slide it in their E-M10 IV Octo housingthe system is “the best tool for underwater photography”—and in their latest paper, they make a very convincing case.

In the video accompanying the article, Media Producer Robin Dodd doesn’t just analyze the camera and case; he also provides helpful documentation on how to shoot underwater with a Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera, from discussing all the reasons you should use an interchangeable lens camera to different types of lenses that you can use to capture all kinds of underwater subjects. Additionally, Robin clearly describes two different ways to approach using the Olympus E-M10 IV: first, combining a 14–42mm kit lens with different wet lenses for close-up and wide-angle shots. ; and second, swap lenses and ports for maximum image quality.

Robin highlights many other benefits of the Olympus E-M10 IV system, including auto TTL flash output with the hugely popular Backscatter. Mini Flash 2 (MF-2) macro focus strobeHigh-speed sync (HSS) shooting with the MF-2, fast flash sync via the flash trigger built into the Octo housing, and vacuum and humidity detection systems are also incorporated into the housing.

All in all, if you’re looking for your first underwater video/photography gear, or you’re looking to upgrade from a compact device like the TG-6, then Backscatter’s new article is a must-have. Watch the video above and then see the article This.
