One of the first Alfa Romeo SZ The model to roll off the line more than three decades ago is back to its former glory and it looks like polarization forever. It was restored by none other than Alfa Romeo. Well, by FCA’s Legacya subsidiary in Stellantis Take care of classic cars from Alfa, Fiat, Lancia and Abarth.
FCA Heritage has been operating since 2015, keeping Lancia Deltas go with new parts from their directory and by issuing a certificate of authenticity to the settlement Craigslist dispute in Italy. But some of the center’s most important work is maintenance of classic Italian cars and full restorations as with SZ.
FCA’s Heritage Workshop, located at the former Abarth Headquarters, was briefly closed at the height of the pandemic, but open again not long after, because someone had to rebuild and restore these machines. And they have to do it right:
This Alfa Romeo SZ is just the latest complete restoration FCA’s Legacy shared with fans. Alfa SZ is affectionately known as ‘il mostro,’ as Periodismo del Motor because of its design. It was dubbed the ‘monster’ because it looked bizarre and extreme when it debuted in 1989.
I don’t know what the Italians’ intentions were to call their best vehicles monsters, but there is at least one other charming red machine from Italy, Ducati Monster.
The Alfa Romeo SZ (Sport Zagato) was developed and produced a third, as Periodic comment. The car is sleek and square and is the product of the design team at Alfa, Fiat’s Robert Opronand Zagato. Notably, the Alfa design team do Walter De Silva at the time, and although the car’s name spoke to Zagato, the company’s design contributions are still up for debate. This Alfa Romeo SZ, restored in our Officerine Classiche workshop, is a factory car from the Balocco test circuit: a true test car, it was used in shoots to showcase the model. and differed in many details from the other SZ units that were subsequently manufactured, including the steering wheel and the instrumentation background color.
The new Zagato-designed SZ and Alfa Romeo Tonale evoke the proud lines of the headlights. It was assembled almost by hand at the Milan coachworks on the outskirts of the city, with about a thousand built between late 1989 and 1991.
The car has been completely disassembled and meticulously rebuilt. The all-composite bodywork has been stripped and painted and the interior has been completely recreated with conservation in mind. The loving manual assembly from decades ago had to be continued by dismantling the vehicle so that the shop could restore it to the original manufacturing specifications that FCA Heritage maintains. I can’t imagine how much it costs to restore like this, and to be honest, I’m a bit scared ask.
