Today Nice price or no dice The S4 features an interesting color combination of Phantom Black against a black and copper two-tone interior. That’s all well and good, but it’s what’s underneath the aesthetic that makes this Audi so interesting. Let’s see if the price tag ruins the party.
Ford’s F-Series has topped the US sales charts for the past 46 years. The 1989 F-150 we watched yesterday leave the factory just over a decade after that reign. Despite the F-Series’ overall sales title, our particular truck couldn’t make it to the class given its $10,000 asking price. Based on reviews, that’s too much for a six-cylinder car showing signs of rust. In the end, that resulted in a 60 No Dice loss.
In contrast to Ford’s success with its consistently topping trucks, the Volkswagen Group has had some ups and downs with its premium Audi brand. At least here in the United States. At one point, sales were bad – after an extremely questionable passage about the brand from CBS 60 minutes – that higher levels of VW were seriously considering pulling Audi from the US market.
It would be a shame and would deny US citizens access to cars like these 2014 Audi S4 Quattro. The S4 is a revered nameplate that initially anointed the hot version of the C4 A6 and then tackled the same task for the smaller A4. In the case of this car, it was a B8 A4 that ran from 2009 to the 2016 model year.
Giving this S its “Sports” character is a 3.0-liter alloy V6 fitted with an Eaton twin-scroll supercharger to give its Vee victory. From the factory, this one does well with 329 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. Here comes a six-speed manual transmission and Audi’s legendary Quattro AWD system. According to the dealer listing, this S4 offers an Audi Quattro Sports differential above all else.
It also comes with optional carbon fiber interior trim, blind spot monitoring and a Bang & Olufsen sound system. The list of standard equipment below is long enough to say that this Audi is overloaded.
At only 71,065, it doesn’t load with miles though. Those numbers work out to about 9,000 a year, which is far below the norm and makes one wonder if this was the original lease with a mileage excess penalty. That may not be the case, as the engine bay shows that the addition of some cold air is not a typical leave-out when moving to a lease. On the contrary, the engine looks original and is presented quite cleanly, with only the corrosion on the aluminum surface, typical of cars from the Northeast.
No complaints about the bodywork. The trunk lid adds an extended spoiler and has polished exhaust tips that protrude from the carbon fiber extractor. Factory alloys are still present, however, they have been coated with black paint or embedded in resin. Aside from those additions, the car appears to be in stock.
In contrast to the add-ons in the engine compartment and on the bodywork, the only change to the interior appears to be an updated gear lever. Leather and plastic still retain good durability, with only some sag in the mesh behind the seat back to show the age of the car.
An obvious title awaits a potential new owner, as does the dealer’s $28,990 asking price. That’s more than half the price of this S4 when it was new, a not-so-great success in eight years’ time.
