Bonsai art takes the mundane – bushes, hedges, etc., – and transforms it into intricate and beautiful shapes.
A common sight on the historic grounds of British residences and palaces, it brings their gardens and open spaces to life.
While real-life bonsai have certain limitations and use tools like scissors, trimmers, and possibly a cane, one artist has taken inspiration from the field and digitally recreated the aesthetic. its playful, natural beauty.
The series is the brainchild of 75-year-old British artist Richard Saunders, who has married his passion for surrealism with his skills as a digital illustrator. For more than a decade, he has stitched photos of his beloved cat Tolly into lush garden landscapes, creating “The Topamed Cat.”
A series of photos shared on Facebook, Saunder’s Official website and also available as card, in memory of Tolly, who passed away in 2016.
Since then, the project has extend to a plot story that explores the nature of the Fortune Cat as “a transcendent being” who “suffers ‘human’ to a degree but becomes exasperated when challenged. He is particularly sensitive. with the abuse of nature and unkindness of any kind”.
Saunders’ playful style, which appears not only in the digital illustrations but also in his adorable captions on social media, goes well with the adorable silliness of a giant beast. .
Thankfully, the project not only showcases Saunders’ love for Tolly but also his new kitten, Georgi! Talk to My Modern Met, Saunders explain How did the project develop?
“He [The Topiary Cat] currently accompanied by another Russian Blue named ‘Georgi’, now almost four years old. His alter ego in the photos is quite false and is referred to by his trusted mentor as ‘G’ (Georgi Kitten),” he said.
Saunders has adapted the story into a book, which he plans to release soon. He continues to post on social media and his own website, ensuring the project continues to delight thousands of fans.
