For a horse that has been part of the control speed in each of her 11 starts, racing in seventh place that only four horses beat at the half-mile post would makes any sharp racer scratching their heads. However, driver Jose Ortiz has shown everyone once again why he is one of the top drivers in the country, Artie’s princess caught up to the sizzling initial pace before guiding the shark to an extended score in the September 19 Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes (G2).
As the half-Canadian of Ken Ramsey and his late wife Sarah, Artie’s Princess regularly runs at Honeysuckle, where she was a three-time winner on the synthetic track. The Masters, with a $400,000 purse, may have attracted the top sprinting mares on the pitch Caravel and Change controll, but it’s also the perfect US target for the synthetic-loving Princess Artie.
As expected, Caravel soon took the lead under the leadership of Luis Saez. Double bet winner on Presque Isle Downs summed up as a 3-year-old, Caravel had most of the way on its own, rapidly dropping open rates of: 21.97 and: 44.54. On the bend home, Ortiz guided Artie’s Princess from Saturday to Monday, and with a quarter of a mile to run, she found her way between the horses and kicked the ropes.
Trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., Artie’s Princess stopped the timer in a record time of 1:14.57 for 6 1/2 furlongs.
Coffee shop club , lit the tote board at 24-1 for coach Shug McGaughey, rallied late along the inside to finish second. Housemates with Saffie Joseph Valuable finished the trio in third place.
Favorite Caravel dropped to fourth while Change of Control, failing to surface treatment on her first launch in the compilation, finished in ninth out of 11.
Improving her earnings to $556,541 after winning the second-ranked share win of her career, Artie’s Princess paid $8.20 for a $2 winning ticket on pick 3 -1 second.
Artie’s Princess was named the 2020 Sovereign Award winning female sprinter after capturing the Bessabarian Stakes (G2) and the Ruling Angel Stakes. A staunch mare, she won 7 of her 12 career starts.
The daughter of Ramsey’s 1st class winner, We Miss Artie, Artie’s Princess is the second foal in the Atlantic Stormkeeper mare breed. The dam, who died this year, produced two winners from three ponies for the race. Her youngest children are an avid sister to Artie’s Princess and a pony weaned by Gunman .
Surly Furious beat Presque Isle Mile Stakes
Two previous races on the card, Novogratz Racing Stables’ Surly Furious took $200,000 in Presque Isle Downs Mile shares for local coach Glenn Wismer.
Removed by Luis Saez, the Surly Furious sits on a favorite stalking ride Carpenter Call before plunging onto the rails on the final turn, winning a decisive 1/4.
4 year old son of Start up race 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.93.
