Are Kohl’s dogs friendly?

With over 1100 locations, Kohl’s ranks as the largest department store chain in the US. Along with fashion and home decor, they also sell a variety of pet products, from dog beds to dog sweaters. But is Kohl’s dog friendly?

Unfortunately Kohl’s is not a dog-friendly chain. While there may always be a store manager that allows dogs, this is not a chain that welcomes dog shoppers.

Please plan to leave your dog at home to shop at Kohl’s (take it home for a surprise!) or shop Kohl’s online store.

Are service dogs allowed at Kohl’s?

Trained service dogs necessary to assist you are permitted to enter any Kohl’s store as required Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) notes, “A service animal is a dog specifically trained to work or perform tasks for people with disabilities.”

A special service dog vest, harness, or tag is not required to enter Kohl’s or other public areas, however, stores are allowed to ask two service dog questions:

(1) is the dog a necessary service animal due to a disability,

(2) what work or task has the dog been trained to perform?

According to the ADA, “An employee may not inquire about the person’s disability, request medical documentation, request special identification tags or training materials for the dog, or require the dog to demonstrate the ability to perform the job. your job or duty.”

Service dogs must be accompanied by the person they are trained to serve. (If your spouse requires an assistance dog, you cannot bring an assistance dog into the store; dogs must work with the person needing assistance to qualify for non-dog-friendly places.)

NOTE: If your dog is not a trained service dog, DO NOT misrepresent your dog as a service dog, or you will be breaking the law. Depending on where you live, misrepresent your dog as a service dog can be fined up to $1000.
