Archaeologists discover 7000-year-old road in Croatia

Have you ever seen an ancient tree thousands of years old underwater? road and thought, “Woh looks a lot like my street pavement,”? Fine, now is your chance. Archaeologists have recently discovered the ruins of a 7,000-year-old road (dating to 4,900 BC) that appears to have once linked a artificial land to the island of Korčula in Croatia.

Road – and some other artifacts such as flint blades, rocks axis and pieces of millstones — actually belonged to a lost maritime culture known as the Hvar. They occupied this area in time new stone age.

The ruins were found just 15 feet below the surface of Gradina Bay, on the west coast of Korčula, by Igor Borzić, a researcher at Zadar University’s Department of Archeology, according to a report. Facebook post conducted by the university, and archaeologists were able to use a process called radiocarbon analysis to figure out the age of the settlement. The university also released new footage of the underwater “path” made of stacked stones about 12 feet wide.

“During the course of underwater archeology at the Soline underwater Neolithic site on the island of Korčula, archaeologists found relics that surprised them as well. Specifically, underneath the sea mud, they discovered a path connecting the sunken prehistoric settlement of the Hvar culture with the shores of Korčula island,” the post said.

The post goes on to say that the research is a collaborative effort between several organisations, companies and scientists. Many other Hvar ruins and artifacts have been discovered underwater. Those discoveries include a settlement built on an artificial island. That’s where our path comes in. It connects the island to the Korčula coast.

However, archaeologists don’t just search underwater. They also seem to be excavating ancient sites on land, including a cave in the nearby town of Vela Luka.
