Arcangelo Is Don Alberto’s First G1 Winner

Never judge a horse by its auction price and never overlook the pedigree that has produced excellent racehorses from generation to generation. Here are the lessons to be learned Arcangelo prevented a cavalry attack to capture the Belmont Stakes (G1) on 10 June.

The Arcangelo was bred in Kentucky by Don Alberto, an international racing and breeding company owned by Liliana Solari and her son Carlos Heller Solari, who expanded from their facility in Chile in 2015 when they acquired the old Vinery farm near Lexington. Because of its pedigree, the ranch is now celebrating its first US 1st place win with a US-bred horse.

The late Juddmonte Farms owner’s 3-year-old son, Arrogate, was not featured in the September 2021 Keeneland Annual Sale because he was small and immature. Also at the time of the sale, Arrogate had not yet recruited any equity performers so the buyer was still unsure how his student career would play out. Owner Jon Ebbert saw an intriguing longing that might take longer than usual and brought him home from Gainesway consignment for $35,000. Puzzles coached by Jena Antonucci.

Judging by the pedigree, Arcangelo is a thief.

Arrogate, by Song of the Unbridled, is a four-time winner of level/group 1 who come in Travers Stakes (G1) where he placed a Racecourse Saratoga 1 1/4 mile track record, Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), Dubai World Cup (G1) and Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1). He retired as North America’s richest racehorse with an income of $17,422,600.

Towards the dam, Arcangelo was out faucet Model daughter. Persistent minor injuries prevented her from proving her abilities on the track, but her role as a mare was never in doubt. She is a half-sister to Hollywood Starlet Stakes winner (G1) streaming (Smart Strike), for bet winners Museum piece (Intelligent) and Cascading (AP Indy) and two other bet winners. More significantly, Modeling’s second smash was 2007’s Broodmare of the Year Better Than Honor, 2006 Belmont Stakes winner’s smash Jazil ; 2007 Belmont Stakes winner and champion, chubby 3-year-old boy Rags to get rich ; group 1, class 2 win casino drive ; and Breeders’ Cup Marathon winner Iron Man .

Because of this pedigree, Don Alberto spent $2.85 million to purchase Modeling at Keeneland’s November 2014 Breeding Sale from a Hill ‘n’ Dale Dealership shipment.

Reed Ringler, chief executive officer of Don Alberto’s US said: “He’s very immature and Arrogate is in a place where people aren’t sure about him, even though he has wowed us and is a among the best racehorses of the last decade”. activity, about Arcangelo. “The world came to see him and judge him and physically he was just behind.

“But we had heard before that a good horse could come from anywhere, and we started again,” he continued. “We talk about this all the time at the farm. Peyton Mannings isn’t always the star, they’re also immature kids who just need a little time to grow up.”

Peyton Manning is an NFL quarterback who was selected as the #1 pick in 1998 and went on to win two Super Bowl titles with the Indianapolis Colts (2006) and the Denver Broncos (2015).

Arcangelo was Modeling’s first black performer. The mare’s first foal, a Distorted Humor stallion named Montmartre, is her only other winner to date. The model hasn’t had a pony since she gave birth to Arcangelo in 2020 because of persistent health problems.

“She is a project,” says Ringler, but our mares manager Raul Garcia is phenomenal and has a sixth sense about mares. “Right now, we’re counting days (to confirm pregnancy) on Munnings . Also, Models have a daughter that we are very lucky to have, and we are counting the days Uncle Mo with her.”

filly’s only model is Medaglia d’Oro Madison Square’s daughter, who also did not start. Madison Square has a fledgling Malibu Moon pony that will be offered for sale during Keeneland’s September sale and has produced a pony by Connect This year.

“I think Arcangelo shows with these pedigrees that if you can get a pony on the ground, special things can happen,” says Ringler.

Don Alberto has achieved phenomenal success in Chile. Since 1994, the farm has bred 143 graded/grouped stake winners, of which 57 are class/group 1 winners. The goal when opening the US extension was to repeat the success of the company. it’s in the sales ring and on the track.

In 2021, Don Alberto bred and sold the highest priced crossbreed sold in North America that year when MV Magnier purchased a foal by into naughty 1st grade champion Queen Paola for $2.6 million. Gainesway deposited the pony at Fasig-Tipton’s Saratoga Select Annual Sale.

Now, the farm has bred the first American classic winner.

“That’s been the goal for 10 years. Liliana and Carlos wanted to win the big races and sell the big horses, but the level of patience needed for this to happen was brutal,” Ringler said. “(Arcangelo) was popular from the moment he first appeared. He was soon in our sights and he improved through every race. We are grateful to Jena for being so patient with him. That’s a big milestone for the farm.”
