Apple Maps tracks Porsche Taycan’s energy usage, shows charging stations

With a CarPlay-based option, Apple Maps has access to Taycan’s real-time performance and battery charge status so it can map out your trip and make real-time adjustments. Specifically, the Maps application mines information about your battery, energy consumption and vehicle model, but does not share the data with Porsche.

Apple Maps route planner will use Taycan-specific energy consumption patterns, update your estimated energy usage along the way and include details like elevation changes and estimated speed, suggesting charging stops on the route when needed.

That’s basically what Porsche’s existing Charge Planner, bundled with the Taycan’s navigation system, has done.

But there is a difference. The Apple Maps method uses information from the car but cannot affect battery performance. So while the Charge Planner activates a battery precondition when you get close to the charging station—to provide the fastest possible charging speeds—it’s not to the advantage of those who use it. That said, as Green Car Reports has previously observed, it may not make much of a difference, depending on the ride. While Taycan pre-conditioning for a 350 kw DC fast charger means significant time savings—especially in colder weather—the advantages of battery tuning for a 150 kw DC fast charger are not significantly.

All Taycan models are routing compatible, but Taycans 2021 and earlier will need a dealer-managed software update.

To use this feature, you must be running iOS 16.4 or later, and you need the My Porsche app on your iPhone. And if you have multiple vehicles, they can be selected in the app.

BMW applied Apple for the first time CarPlay-based charger routing in BMW i4. However, GM took a very different tack; they recently said they have no plans to support Apple CarPlay and are instead aiming for an experience that will continue Branded app with “one click” feature.

Google has provided electric cars charges places in its Maps app as of 2018, although it is not yet integrated as part of route planning or very useful for filtering stations by toll level.
