Animal Equality exposes rabbit killing in Mexico’s meat industry
- Animal Equality has published an investigation into Mexico’s rabbit meat industry, documenting extreme animal cruelty.
- Among the findings were overcrowding in cages, slaughter without stunning and the sound of rabbits screaming in despair before slaughter.
- Based on these findings, Animal Equality filed a complaint with the relevant authorities.
- Previous investigations into the global rabbit meat industry have uncovered similar cruelty in Italy and Spain.
Animal Equality’s latest investigation, “Rabbits: Companion or Meat?”, exposes extreme cruelty to rabbits raised for food in Mexico. The investigation documented one rabbit farm in Querétaro and two in Mexico City.
Findings include:
Overload in battery cage:Rabbits, like other animals raised for meat, are kept in wire “battery” cages that injure their legs and prevent them from stretching. Overcrowding makes the situation worse, with up to ten rabbits crammed into some cages.
Abuse and cruelty:Rabbits are mistreated by handlers, leading to fear and distrust. They are roughly transported to the slaughter area, weighed and transferred between cages.
Kill without stunning first:Rabbits are fully conscious as their throats are slit, causing them to bleed to an agonizing death. The chaotic slaughter process often leaves rabbits hanging for long periods of time, forcing them to witness each other’s suffering and predict their own fate.
The rabbit cried out in pain.:For the first time, people have recorded a scene where a rabbit, an animal that is usually silent, screams miserably in despair before dying.

Violation of Mexican law
Videos and photos show violations of Mexican law, which regulates slaughter methods. Despite existing regulations, evidence shows frequent violations. These include failing to stun rabbits before slaughter and leaving rabbits hanging for longer than allowed.
Animal Equality has filed a complaint with the relevant authorities but has not received a response.
A national and global concern
In Mexico, lax breeding regulations allow for extreme confinement and mutilation without pain relief. Rabbits, like other farmed animals, are not protected by law during the breeding phase. Most legal complaints focus on transportation or slaughter, although these are often ignored and unenforced.
While Mexico ranks 19th in global rabbit meat production, Animal Equality has documented similar cruelty against Jewish clergy in Spain and Italy. Meanwhile, investigations into the global factory farming industry have uncovered cruelty in the United States, such as at Calf Farm Connected with Babybel.
Fight Cruelty with Plant-Based Alternatives
Rabbits, like the dogs and cats many of us live with, are sensitive and intelligent creatures. However, in the meat industry, animals are only valued when their meat can be sold. Animal Equality continues to expose cruelty in the meat, dairy and egg industries, with over [insert number] people who signed our petition to end factory farming in the United States.
