In a big sign that things aren’t right with contemporary boxing, the undisputed heavyweight title fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk, was due to take place on April 29 at Wembley Stadium. in London, has been cancelled.
Chances are you already know this, as the news was pretty much covered over the past 24 hours. However, talking about talkSPORT Yesterday, both Usyk and Fury’s promoters agreed to speak. That strategy obviously didn’t work, because BBC on Wednesday night quoted Fury promoter Frank Warren as saying the fight was a “dead duck”.
That is life.
“They said the match had to be by April 29 and if it was later they wanted different splits,” Warren said. BBC. “The reason they did it was because they didn’t think Tyson would be ready for the 29th and suddenly Tyson was ready for it…he’s been in training camp for two and a half weeks, with trainers from the US. come and they look for a way out.”
Of course, that’s not how Team Usyk sees it. Indeed, Usyk promoter Alexander Krassyuk has stated that, after Usyk agreed to split the finances 70/30 in Fury’s favor, “Tyson Fury started to think he could saddle up. neck and started riding Usyk as much as he could. It’s not true.”
And another super fight will bite the dust.
