Alpinista Notches Third Group 1 Success in Germany
The fantastic German run of Alpinista continued Nov. 7 at Munich when the Newmarket raider captured the Allianz-Grosser Preis Von Bayern (G1), her third successive group 1 in the country and the same hat-trick achieved by her granddam Albanova 17 years ago.
Trained by Sir Mark Prescott for breeder/owner Kirsten Rausing, Alpinista won the Longines Grosser Preis von Berlin (G1) at Hoppegarten in August before striking in the Preis von Europa (G1) at Cologne the following month.
She again showed her fondness for traveling and German racing by answering every one of jockey Luke Morris’s calls to complete the historic feat.

A 4-year-old daughter of Frankel , Alpinista recorded some smart efforts in Britain, including a second in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks (G1) as a 3-year-old and a triumph in this year’s bet365 Lancashire Oaks (G2), but has gone on to make her mark at the highest level in Germany. The form of her Grosser Preis von Berlin success was flattered when Torquator Tasso , who finished second to the mare that day, landed an upset victory in the Oct. 3 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1).
Prescott stated: “The grandmother gained these races and now she’s achieved it, which is uncommon. You would not have a clue if it has been achieved earlier than however these races had been the plan and he or she’s achieved all the things foot good.
“It’s extremely seldom a plan like that comes off, however she’ll run subsequent yr and I suppose she’ll go for the glitzy group 1s having gained these German ones, that are marvelous in their very own proper and the shape has labored out nicely, as everybody is aware of.”
Alpinista had three-quarters of a size to spare from Mendocino , while fellow Newmarket raider Believe In Love was fifth of the six runners.
Prescott added: “I wouldn’t have thought she was capable of winning three group 1s this time last year. You thought she might win something nice, but I think she’s got better as the season has gone on and the grandmother was 5 when she won these races, so you’ve got reason to hope this filly would improve again from 4 to 5.
“She’ll back at Miss Rausing’s in a week for a heroine’s welcome.”
Alpinista has now captured six wins from 11 lifetime starts. She is the first foal produced from the stakes-winning Hernando mare Alwilda. The aforementioned Albanova, the dam of Alwilda, was a multiple group 1 winner and the high-weighted mare in England and Germany during her illustrious career.
