One woman who raised money for an all-terrain wheelchair so she could get to her Peak District home she loves so much says it liberated her.
Naomi Wheeler, 28, from Matlock, Derbyshire, has a cerebellar ataxia which affects her balance, coordination and speech.
Although Naomi was diagnosed with the condition at the age of 23, after noticing a change in the way she walked, she said her consultant had told her he had never seen the condition develop. developed that way before and therefore cannot provide a more precise way. diagnosis or prognosis.
She uses social media to help raise awareness about accessibility issues for people in wheelchairs while walking in the countryside.
Naomi says her chair makes her feel free – “as if I can do anything and I’m defying anything”.
Responding to the issues raised by Ms Wheeler, wheelchair charity Whiz-Kidz said: “Although we do not know the exact number of routes that are accessible in rural areas across the UK, United Kingdom, but we know in advance that the lack of equal access in all public spaces is a big problem for many people and must be improved.
“This change must first begin with consultation with wheelchair users.”
