Alert! Pharmaceutical company Buries Antidepressant research unfavorable
Drugmaker AstraZeneca has “buried” adverse studies on the antipsychotic drug Seroquel, according to an internal e-mail. E-mail made public due to drug litigation.
An AstraZeneca official said in a December 1999 e-mail that the drugmaker had failed to release the results of at least three clinical trials on Seroquel and engaged in “cherry picking” from one those studies to use in a presentation. The company faces about 9,000 lawsuits claiming it failed to properly warn users that Seroquel could cause diabetes and other health problems.
Seroquel, which generated $4.45 billion in revenue in 2008, is the company’s second best-selling product after ulcer drug Nexium. AstraZeneca has denied wrongdoing and has vowed to fight the lawsuits in court.
