Microsoft Co-founder Bill Gates believes that the future leader in artificial intelligence will likely create a personal digital agent that can perform certain tasks for people.
This technology will be so profound, it can completely change the behavior of users. “Whoever wins personal agency, that’s important, because you’ll never go to the search page again, you’ll never go to the productivity page, you’ll never visit the Amazon again,” he said.
This undeveloped AI assistant will be able to understand a person’s needs and habits and will help them “read things you don’t have time to read,” Gates said Monday at a Goldman Sachs event. and SV Angel in San San. Francisco on the topic of artificial intelligence.
Gates said there’s a 50-50 chance that this future AI winner will be a startup or a tech giant.
“I would be disappointed if Microsoft didn’t get in on it,” Gates said. “But I am impressed with a number of startups, including Inflection,” he added, referring to Inflection.AI, co-founded by former DeepMind executive Mustafa Suleyman.
Gates said it will be some time until this powerful digital agent of the future is ready for universal use. Until then, companies will continue to embed so-called generic AI technologies like OpenAI’s popular ChatGPT into their own products.
Gates also discussed medical efforts related to his work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, saying AI will drive innovations in the space and lead to more advanced drug development.
Although the inner workings of the human brain remains a mystery to scientists, the Microsoft co-founder believes humanity is getting closer to creating useful drugs to cure diseases. like Alzheimer’s, with human trials of this new drug possibly in 10 years.
He also likens the rise of general AI technologies that can produce compelling text as a game changer that will affect office workers. Gates added that he believes future humanoid robots that are cheaper for companies to use than human employees will also have a big impact on blue-collar workers.
“When we invented these robots, we just had to make sure they didn’t have Alzheimer’s disease,” Gates joked.
