On Friday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on Twitter that the company will increase the price of its premium driver assistance package, marketed as Full Self-Driving or FSD, from $10,000 to $12,000 on January 17, for US customers only. .

In a series of tweets on Twitter, where he has 69.2 million followers, Musk wrote, “FSD Tesla price up to $12k on Jan. 17. US only. FSD price will increase as we get closer more to the release of the FSD production code.”

When a follower asked him about Tesla’s FSD subscription product (currently $199 per month for most customers), Musk noted, “The monthly subscription price will increase as FSD goes live. ” He also teased a new release of the FSD Beta, an invite-only program that offers more advanced features to select Tesla-eligible drivers.

Tesla does not disclose in its income statements exactly how many of its customers pay FSD upfront or sign up for FSD each quarter. So it’s not clear how a price increase in the US could boost its profitability going forward.

The company’s standard driver assistance package is marketed as Autopilot and is standard on all of its new vehicles (Models S, X, Y and 3).

Autopilot functionality includes but is not limited to automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane keeping and adaptive cruise control, essentially matching your vehicle’s speed to the speed limit. of the surrounding traffic, according to Tesla website.

Tesla’s Full Autonomous Driving option, also known as FSD, is a premium package that includes Autopilot functions and more sophisticated features such as automatic lane change, stop light recognition and “smart summons” allows drivers to call their vehicle from the on-site parking lot to pick them up, using their smartphone and the Tesla app as a remote control. Despite the name, today it does not allow cars to drive themselves without driver intervention.

Separately, there is also an FSD Beta tier, which includes more advanced features.

Musk said in a tweet on Friday that the new 10.9 release, the FSD Beta update, is nearing completion.

Only drivers who receive, buy or sign up for FSD and get high scores in “safety point” from Tesla, can access the FSD Beta. Once in, they can test out immature features like “autonomous city streets,” which Tesla says will eventually allow drivers to navigate around residential and urban roads. , avoid all obstacles without having to drive yourself.

California Department of Motor Vehicles and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are investigating various aspects of Tesla’s FSD technology and development.

Tesla has told both agencies that their technology is only a “level 2” system. As defined by the DMV, “A Level 2 system can enhance safety or assist a driver who is unable to drive or operate a vehicle without active physical supervision or control by a driver.” People.”

But Musk has implied that the company’s technology is more advanced than level 2. In an interview published on December 28, 2021, Youtuber Lex Fridman asked Musk, “When do you think Tesla will tackle Level 4 FSD?” Musk replied: “It looks like it will most likely be next year,” meaning 2022.

Tesla has been promising self-driving cars since around 2016, but the company has yet to demonstrate the hands-free driving feature across the US, which Elon Musk says will be possible by the end of 2017.
