After Uvalde Shooting, Buffalo School Bans Parents From Visiting Without Notice: NPR

After a mass shooting in their homeland and a second at a Texas elementary schoolThe school district in Buffalo, NY, is barring all unannounced visitors from its buildings, including students’ parents.
“Any person wanting to enter a school MUST call first and get pre-approved to enter the building,” Buffalo Public Schools announced on wednesday. “This includes parents, carers, siblings and vendors; NO EXCEPTIONS will be made.”
The district has announced all school doors will remain locked during the school day, and there will be an increased security presence at schools, including Buffalo Police Department officers.
The district said: “There are camera screens at the front entrance of each of our schools. If reporting on a scheduled meeting, ALL visitors will need to report their names and the names of their children. them to be notified of admission,” the school district said. “On entry, visitors may have to go through a screening process and/or look for additional safety measures.”
Report by WBFO Emyle Watkins that the policies will also apply to all graduation ceremonies and other events marking the end of the school year.
Above Morning version, NPR’s Cory Turner notes There’s been a lot of movement in recent years towards “hardening” schools and increasing security, but that research shows that’s not the best approach. Instead, experts recommend anti-bullying measures, provide anonymous ways of reporting the behavior involved, and apply a threat assessment model.
