After saving a Bobcat kitten’s life, hero Shelter Cat was rewarded with his own home

An orange and white cat named Smuckers was injured in a bunker after its owner died. But this heartbreaking change comes with a silver lining. When a baby lynx fell ill, the 4-year-old shelter cat stood up to save its life.

The touching story begins when a baby lynx is brought to a wildlife hospital in New Brunswick, Canada. “The cat is clearly unwell,” one of the hospital’s veterinarians, Dr Nicole Jewett, told Canada’s Global News.

The baby lynx is so weak and dehydrated veterinarians can’t even read its temperature. Doctors tried giving her an intravenous injection, but further testing showed that the kitten really needed an urgent blood transfusion.

That’s when wildlife technicians called the Fredericton shelter where Smuckers was staying, looking for shelter cats that could act as potential blood donors.

“Whether you’re a domestic cat or a lynx, it’s still a cat, they have similar blood types, so it’s a compatible combination,” says Dr Jewett. As it turned out, Smuckers and the baby lynx (who was named Fiona by the vet) both had blood type A.

“And, thankfully, Smuckers is the hero,” the shelter’s director of operations, Annette James, told. news store.

“It’s an extraordinary story because his arrival at a shelter was not planned or expected,” speak James, describes how Smuckers had only recently arrived when he became Fiona’s blood donor.

“But the fact that he was able to pay and help another fur baby – even though (she was) a wildlife fur baby – is a huge legacy for Smuckers to work towards. ”

According to her carers, Fiona is now said to be “very fine”, who say the baby lynx is once again acting like a lynx. When she is healthy and well enough, hospital staff will take her into the wild.

“So she hissed, she growled, if you get close to her she’ll try to attack you, because that’s what they do to humans, because it’s a fight or flight response to wildlife,” speak Dr. Jewett.

“Obviously right now, she’s fighting. That’s great. This is amazing,” she said speak. “We love it when wild animals try to attack us because it means they feel good.”

The future of Smuckers is also very bright. After news leaked of the shelter cat’s heroic deeds, adoption offers began pouring in. Follow Fredericton SPCA, Smuckers was accepted into his new permanent home.

“He is doing great. (His new owner) adores him, she loves him to the moon and back,” speak James. “All the pieces come together, and it’s lovely when that happens.
