I don’t mean that something magical like Webbed changed my life or cured my depression. I mean it simply radiates joy, in a way that I can’t imagine becoming immune to it. Lots of games are cute, fun or bright and friendly, with all sorts of shades to match their tone. Ooblets, say, or Adventure Pals. I’m usually qualified to talk about such games with “but no too sweet”, or note that they have a dark side to balance it out. Webbed is different. It’s a little salty, but without a hint of tragedy or sadness. It’s not merely absurd, it’s fundamental. is joy.
Another word that you need to keep in mind is adventure. Accelerating as you climb and spin gives you a sense of pulling yourself forward that’s not just satisfying on a basic physical level. It feels like you’re actually traveling and covering the ground in a way that steady motion isn’t. But there were two moments that really made me feel like I was on to something, and I was stupid for not realizing that it was. Outstanding Soundtrack by Stijn Van Wakeren crown for both. I won’t spoil the second, but the first is when you get to the muddy foot of a small hill, which is of course a mountain to you. The rest is hard to fault. So many games feel, if not dull, then simply fine to go around. The gripping movement has bogged down many massive open world games and more modest games, but Webbed has completely nailed the physics and its web slinging sounds so good that even months after completion I’ve done it twice, I still launch it occasionally just to enjoy myself for a few minutes. I sneered at the final control reminder, I surrounded Alice when I found the secret area, I pestered Astrid with screenshots of ants happily calling me “comrade spider!” .
