A spicier Subaru WRX is coming, but don’t expect an STI revival

Subaru is bringing a special edition of the WRX sedan to Australia, but while it looks more aggressive, it’s unlikely to offer any more power.

The 2024 Subaru WRX Club Specs will arrive in April, with just 150 available for Australia.

It will only be available as a sedan with a six-speed manual transmission, Brembo brakes, Recaro seats, 19-inch wheels and a larger rear spoiler.

No additional power was given, suggesting it will use the standard turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four with 202 horsepower and 350Nm of torque.

It’s unclear how much it will cost, though WRX sedan The range now tops out at $57,990 before on-road costs for the automatic tS.

Subaru only released an image of the car, which the company said was for illustration purposes only.

It’s almost identical to the North American WRX TR, launched last year, which uses identical wheels and also has Brembo brakes and Recaro seats – but without the giant spoiler.

The WRX TR’s Brembo braking system includes red-painted six-piston front and two-piston rear calipers, along with larger pads and rotors and a larger brake master cylinder. These more powerful brakes sit behind 19-inch wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires.

Subaru of America also says the WRX TR has stiffer springs, revised damping and a revised steering rack. It’s unclear whether the Australian-market Club Spec will feature similar mechanical changes.

The Club Spec will join other manual WRXs in receiving Subaru’s EyeSight suite of active safety and driver assistance technologies.

As Subaru did with BRZ user manualThe three-pedal WRX has automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and leading vehicle warning, plus blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic alert The rear has been standardized.

This addresses a large gap in standard safety kit between the manual and automatic WRX.

Subaru confirmed in 2022 Destroy the WRX STIWith the fifth generation WRX there won’t be this top performance variant.

“The STI engineers and that team, who have done all these great things, haven’t packed up and gone home yet. They are still there,” said Blair Read, Subaru Australia managing director. Car expert in 2022.

“Part of the change in direction with the STI brand is how it can play a role not just in one model variant but across all products.

“There are interesting options and developments in a number of different areas that will be incorporated into all the different models.”
