What to wear to the ballet — and what to avoid
As a newbie last month went to her first truth ballet, I can tell from experience how complicated an event’s attire is. Part of that is due to its appeal and exclusivity. Often held in lavish theatres, such as the Palais Garnier Opera in Paris and the Vienna State Opera in Austria, it’s easy to assume that attending a large-scale ballet is immediately fall in love. asked for a sophisticated outfit that said, “Of course I’m at the ballet. Where else would I be?”
Adding to the pressure of being on schedule are all the pop culture moments that take place at or outside of one of the elegant performances, from Vietnamese in a little pink dress, tied around the waist outside Lincoln Center on Sex and the city (fun fact: Sarah Jessica Parker is the vice president of the New York City Ballet) to Julia fox, fox wore a metallic Zac Posen gown at the city’s Fall 2022 Fashion Gala. Usually, when we see photos of people attending a ballet, it’s to celebrate a big company moment. A red carpet was rolled out and expectations of what attendees showed were high.
But contrary to what you’ve seen on social media, experiencing the beauty of a ballet at one of the world’s top theaters isn’t always a sight-seeing event. Sometimes, say if performance you’ll see what’s going on during the day, Skin can be quite normal. Then again, no one will say a word if you raise it up a little. Really, it’s all about your personal style preferences. Follow New York City Ballet, that and your comfort level is all that matters. Of course, if it’s a gala or other special event you’re attending, always refer to your invitation for dress details.
