Watermelon Slice Jello Shots – A Beautiful Mess
What can be more summer than a beautiful slice of watermelon? Well, what if that piece of watermelon is really a giant watermelon?? I know, I know, a dream come true.
We have filled the fruit with jello and wine before (photo of jello pink lemonade, jello camo cream photoand photo of mojito jello) but when I see you can fill a watermelon and cut it into sliceswell, I had to try it!
As you can see, it’s not only possible but it’s adorable and delicious too!
Sliced Watermelon Jello Shots
half of 1 medium watermelon
2 boxes of watermelon jello or red jello (3-ounce box)
1 box unflavored gelatin (Total 4 envelopes)
2 cups of water
2 cups vodka
Use one watermelon tools or a scoop of ice cream to scoop out the insides of a watermelon and set aside (for later, of course!). You want to remove most of the red meat but still leave about 1/2 ″ of the red on top of the white skin.
Place the hollowed out watermelon on a cookie sheet with folded/stuffed paper towels on the sides to keep it from tipping over.
Mix two boxes of jelly with 4 packs of unflavored gelatin. Add 2 cups boiling water and stir until dissolved. Once dissolved, add in two cups of vodka and stir to combine.
Pour the liquid over half a watermelon (full to the top!) and place in the refrigerator for 3-4 hours until the jelly solidifies. The hardest part of this recipe is getting the tray into the fridge without spilling it!
Once the jelly has set, use a large knife to cut the slices as you would normally. Jelly fills the watermelon some so that the top level shrinks a bit.
Just use the knife to evenly shave any skin that sticks out above your slices and you’re ready to hit your shots!
Of course, a whole slice would be a sizable piece of jello, so feel free to cut them up into smaller pieces or let the guest cut their own.
This recipe has more unflavored gelatin than usual to ensure the slices keep their shape, but if you feel you can “taste” the unflavored gelatin, you can reduce the amount a bit without lose the desired hardness.
How famous would you be if you brought these to a picnic next summer? This dish is sure to make you the queen of the next block party, so grab yourself a watermelon and start eating! so so. Laura
