Fake flushing tips are becoming more and more popular. Whether it’s Ford making holes in the bottoms of the fake rings, or Audi making those silver squares at the bottom of the bumper, they’re everywhere.

It may feel like a fairly new phenomenon, but you’d be wrong. Thanks to our eagle-eyed companion Doug DeMuro, we now know a much-loved car with insanely fake exhaust tips: the Lamborghini Miura.

That’s right, the big man of all modern supercars has a fake exhaust at the back. It’s a surprising choice, but it makes sense: The Miura’s rear end is a clamshell, and when the engine cover opens, there’s no room for the actual exhaust pipes to attach.

The only other options would be to scrape the exhaust tips into the ground every time the engine cover is opened, or use a recessed exhaust that is invisible from the rear. Nobody wants that. The solution is to leave a gap between the actual exhaust and the tips – which means that the famous Miura tips are almost entirely for show.

If you look closely, you can actually see the distance is less when the shell is opened. Insanity.

Sorry for ruining your day. That’s a real fool, I know. But there may be an upside here: The fake exhaust tips are a lot older than we think. And, hey, if they’re good enough for a Lamborghini Miura, they’re definitely not a rarity on your family SUV.
