History and a substantial $15 million are on the way at the 104th PGA Championship as the action wraps up in the Southern Hills on Sunday in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In addition to the record amount that will be paid to the winners who find themselves near the top PGA Championship Leaderboard at the end of the tournament will go home with substantial payouts – even if those checks don’t come with the Wanamaker Trophy.
Players who finish in the top 28 will receive a six-figure salary day, thus alleviating the potential pain of defeat. Despite the grand prize pool, it’s not the biggest prize pool of the season as the Players Championship boasts a record-setting $20 million fund. The masters also recently increased his wallet to $15 million with the same winner’s share as the PGA Championship.
Cameron Smith raked in $3.6 million for his win at TPC Sawgrass last year with Scottie Scheffler cashing in $2.7 million for his win at Augusta National in April. Sunday’s winner will compare with Scheffler with the second largest market share of the year as the PGA Championship will also pay $2.7 million to the newest entrant to its winning circle.
The top of the leaderboard is filled with neophytes, at least when it comes to winning major championships. The top four go into the final 18 holes not only winning the majors but also the entire PGA Tour. Mito Pereira leads 54 holes with a three-stroke advantage over Will Zalatoris and Matthew Fitzpatrick, two out of five golfers will chase him for the long haul. But others like Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy will do their best to make a great win from behind.
