(Update) Senate Passes Anti-Lynching Act After 200 Failed Attempts, President Biden Is Expected To Sign Into Law This Week

After 200 failed attempts, Congress finally passed a bill making it a federal hate crime. Known as the Anti-Lyinging Emmitt Act, the Bill is expected to be signed into law by President Biden this week.

This comes after the House of Representatives passed the Bill last week by a vote of 422-3. As previously reported, the three Republicans who voted against it were Representatives Andrew Clyde (Ga.), Thomas Massie (United.) and Chip Roy (Texas), CNN reported.

“After more than 200 failed attempts to stop illegal extension, Congress finally succeeded in taking long overdue action by passing Emmett’s Anti-lynching Act. Hallelujah. It’s long overdue,” Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in remarks in the Senate after the bill was passed.

He continued, “The first Anti-Slimming Act was enacted a century ago, and after so long, the Senate has finally addressed one of the most shameful elements of this nation’s past. by making the disposition of property a federal crime.” Schumer also claimed that the long time it took to turn a hate crime had left a “bitter stain” on America.

Named after Emmett Till, the 14-year-old black boy from Chicago who was arrested in 1955 while visiting MS., Bill received a 422-3 vote. Introduced by Congressman Bobby Rush, hate crimes are punishable by up to 30 years in prison.

Previously, the House of Representatives passed the bill in 2020, but it was opposed by Sen. Rand Paul,Washington Post reported.

According to The Hill, 120 years ago, Representative then. George Henry White, the only black man in Congress at the time, attempted to pass a similar Bill.

More than 4,700 people lived in the United States between 18882 and 1968 with Blacks making up the majority. As history has taught us, lynching was used as a method to terrorize Negroes. MS has the largest amount of lynching.

Roomies, what do you think about this.
