The Racehorse Owners’ Association has announced that its members will cover the long-term financial security of a career-ending insurance scheme for racers in the UK.
When the program’s commercial sponsor withdrew in 2019, the Professional Horse Association contributed around £400,000 from its own fund to maintain coverage in 2020 and 2021. The Racing Foundation also sponsored £122,000 to secure the program until January 1 .
An additional £3.91 in equestrian fees will underpin this scheme, which will remain in place with the RSA and pay up to £100,000 if a jockey suffers an injury. they could not continue their equestrian career.
The new ‘cycling fee’ will now include riding fees, a career-ending surcharge and a professional riders insurance scheme that covers shorter absences.
PJA President Jon Holmes said: “This is an important policy that provides a one-time payment designed to financially support riders while they are in the process of a forced transition. to a second career.

Steve Astaire, ROA board member said: “The ROA board has been clear that no equestrian should not have career-ending insurance and this agreement will provide comfort. We have always aspired to improve both human and horse welfare standards and riders’ welfare is part of that picture.
“We’ve also simplified owners’ claims to make it simpler and more cost-effective for owners to pay the carriage driver’s fees. One fee covers all costs and clearer and better coverage for both parties.”
