One of Tesla’s strengths is being able to quickly deploy over-the-air fixes for a number of safety-related issues. However, the new recall issues covering 475,318 vehicles will require navigating Tesla’s service system and some form of in-person inspection — even if that might be curbside in some cases.
The automaker is recalling 356,309 units Model 3 sedan to tackle a rearview camera cable According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), damage can be caused by opening and closing the trunk lid, preventing the rearview camera image from showing. This recall covers all 2017-2020 Model 3 vehicles.
Tesla is also recalling 119,009 Model S vehicles from the 2014 to 2021 model years because it could deviated frunk latch assembly. According to NHTSA, if the assembly is misaligned, it can prevent the secondary latch from working, creating the potential for it to come apart while driving.
2020 Tesla Model WILL
Both recalls will require a visit to a Tesla service center for inspection and possibly replacement of affected components free of charge. While this is a common occurrence with other automakers, it’s unusual for Tesla.
The automaker has tried to use over-the-air software updates to solve as many problems as possible, such as when they roll out Software repair for brake performance in 2018.
Recently, however, Tesla had to recall vehicles to address hardware issues. In 2021, it recalls Model 3 and Model Y for one potential brake problems, and later that year, the automaker recalled a number of Model Y vehicles because of suspension problems. Both recalls are likely related to assembly defects.
However, Tesla has yet to have any recalls related to engine parts. The most expensive and most visible recall to date may be the deal with replace touch screen in Model S and Model X vehicles.
