40% on initial price will shorten demand?

Ford earlier this week raised the price of the base Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup by thousands of dollars — the third time in four months.

Just 9 months from first delivery, that makes the base price of the Ford F-150 Lightning 2023 nearly 40% higher than the original base price of the 2022 electric truck—$57,869, compared with $41,669 .

It’s for the fleet-focused F-150 Lightning Pro with standard-range battery (and 240-mile rated range)—already the same model marked by thousands in october. The next model, the Lightning XLT with standard battery, is also priced up to $65,365.

Aside from group buyers, if buyers want the extended range battery pack and its 320-mile rating, the cost of entry currently stands at $82,869 for the XLT, and that requires additional options.

As fuel prices continue to fall, Ford will also apply another $100 increase in destination charges—to $1,895, included in the prices above. Ford has increased destination fees for 2023 with the final price increase.

This time, Ford pointed to the supply chain — that’s what it did in October and August. Though automakers appear divided over whether the worst of problems are over or over. no, an annual survey shows that EV battery costs skyrocket in 2022, due to the high price of raw materials and battery components. F-150 Lightning uses battery cell made in Georgiais part of a joint venture with South Korea’s SK Innovation.

The flagship Lariat and Platinum versions of the F-150 Lightning are unlikely to be affected by this latest price hike. Top-of-the-line Platinum, offered with extended-range batteries only, starts at $98,319.

Ford said it will end mark EV . dealer and haggling with new dealer deals starting January 2024. With these price changes, it could offer some level of runway for that. And it can also upgrade the low of the Lightning series before another electric trucks will arrive in 2024.

“We adjust prices as a normal business process due to rising raw material costs, market factors and ongoing supply chain constraints,” said Elizabeth Kraft, a spokeswoman for Ford Pro. . Kraft also emphasized that retail orders pending delivery are not affected by the adjustment, as are commercial and government customers with a scheduled or committed order.

The more confusing part of these price hikes, perhaps, is Ford’s position for what earlier this year sounded like a game to price their electric vehicles like Lightning for fleet services. Ford Pro. Ford executives have suggested that low entry price for its Pro models is the incentive for companies to get into the company’s even bigger business game: software. Given the backlog of orders Ford faces, that doesn’t seem like a priority anymore — at least not right now.
