2024 Peugeot 208 facelift launched – e-208 EV now offers 400 km range; mild hybrid and NA engines available

The Peugeot 208 second generation was given an upgrade with visual updates, new kit and wider range of performance for all all-electric variants known as e-208. According to the French automaker, this version of the 208 has been a huge success since its debut in 2019, as it was named the European car of the year 2020 and even stole the title of Europe’s best-selling car last year from Volkswagen Golf.

To keep the momentum going, the hatchback gets a new light signature with three long vertical claws instead of just one. They are integrated into the glossy black insert of the front bumper and they are shifted towards the outer edge to create a wider feel.

In the GT version, this lighting feature is extended to the illumination function of the LED headlights using three independent optical modules – the lower Active and Allure versions do not have this. Elsewhere, a patterned grille in the same color as the bodywork blends into the bumper, matching the styling applied to the 508 facelift.

As for the rear, the taillights have a new light signature where the “three claws” are oriented horizontally instead of vertically, again, to create a sense of greater width. On GT models, the reverse and indicator lights are also LEDs. 208 finally receives the brand’s latest lion badge and new lettering, along with new Basalt Gray-finished nameplates – the e-208’s ‘E’ badging comes in two tones of blue and white .

Customers will have more colors to choose from, with Agueda Yellow and Selenium Gray starting to be added to a total of seven options – the GT version adds gloss black wheel arches and a black roof option. Peugeot offers new wheel designs ranging in size from 16 to 17 inches, all with four center spokes embossed with the logo to hide the wheel nuts.

Inside, you’ll find almost everything has been ported, with the i-Cockpit being the main highlight. As for the facelift, all versions now come standard with a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The Allure and GT versions will also get a 10-inch digital instrument cluster with a new design, but the base Active has a 3.5-inch multi-info display with an analog dial.

Other changes include an eight-color ambient lighting system for the 208 GT while versions equipped with a six-speed manual transmission have an adjustable shift lever. Models with eight-speed automatic transmission retain the gear selector that has been available since early 2022.

As for the powertrain, the e-208’s battery has been updated with an energy capacity of 51 kWh instead of the previous 50 kWh, in line with a 400 km operating range (WLTP is being approved), up from 362 km. Power going to an improved electric motor at the front is rated at 156 PS (154 hp or 115 kW), up from 136 PS (134 hp or 100 kW).

Peugeot offers two types of integrated AC chargers, including single-phase, 7.4 kW and three-phase, 11 kW. We were only given the charging time of the previous version, i.e. 4 hours and 40 minutes to reach a 20-80% charge state. This process is shortened to less than 25 minutes when the vehicle is plugged into a DC fast charger capable of matching up to 100 kW input.

The 208 will still be available as a pure petrol hatchback with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol engine. Options include the PureTech 75 with 75 PS (74 hp or 55 kW) and a 5-speed manual transmission, and the PureTech 100 with 101 PS (100 hp or 75 kW) with a 6-speed manual transmission.

Two 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrains with a small electric motor mounted in a six-speed dual-clutch transmission are also part of the lineup. Dubbed the Hybrid 100 and Hybrid 136 come with a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine with 101 PS (100 hp or 75 kW) and 136 PS (134 or 100 kW).
