2023 Porsche 911 GT3 R benefits from more power and more thrust

Porsche has kept a long tradition by presenting the new 911 GT3 R. Based on Current 992 generation 911the race-specific coupe benefits from a larger and more powerful naturally aspirated flat-six, more thrust, and suspension modifications.

Development work began in 2019, and engineers began drawing up a long list of improvements over the successful previous-generation model. Their goals include improving drivability and handling and reducing operating costs. The last point is important because the 911 GT3 R will qualify to compete in a series of races starting in 2024, when special GT3 cars are allowed to race in FIA’s World Endurance Championship (WEC). That means cars like 911 GT3 CHEAP will be invited to line up on the 24 hour departure grid of Le Mans.

Power for the GT3 R comes from an inline-six engine with a displacement increased by 5% to 4.2 liters. It develops about 565 horsepower, and it turns the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential transmission linked to a pair of gearshift paddles. The engine is still rear-mounted, but it leans forward 5.5 degrees to create more space for the rear diffuser. Porsche also notes that it has relocated several components, including the air conditioning system compressor and alternator, to a space in front of the engine to improve the vehicle’s weight distribution.

Mechanics will be able to make setup modifications to the suspension using shims to eliminate the need to spend time re-aligning the system after it has been adjusted. Suspension changes made to the GT3 R also reduce tire wear, helping to reduce racing costs. Porsche notes that it has moved the rear wheel to the rear to increase the wheelbase and reduce the load on the rear tire, and brake system includes a six-piston front caliper that grips the large, 15.35-inch rotors along with rear four-piston calipers mounted around the 14.56-inch rotors.

The carbon fiber body panels and aluminum-steel body help control weight, although Porsche hasn’t announced how much the 911 GT3 R weighs. On the surface, the GT3 R is characterized by a redesign tights and a giant rear wing mounted on a set of swan necks. However, there’s more to the eye: The undercarriage in front of the front axle is raised to improve airflow to the rear diffuser. All told, the 911 GT3 R offers more downforce than its predecessor, but the modifications don’t create additional drag.

Inside, Porsche has moved the driver’s seat closer to the center of the car in the name of ergonomics. The saddle is fixed, although the steering wheel and pedals can be adjusted, and special ramps save about a second per stop by making the six-point harness tighten faster.

For $567,210 excluding destination and options, Porsche 911 The GT3 R is currently on sale through Porsche Motorsport North America. It will make its rival debut at the 2023 Daytona 24 release scheduled for January 2023.
