2023 Kentucky Derby: Mage wins Triple Crown’s first leg; Large Hole Mack Mattress


Mage won the 2023 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday.

Mage had just one win in the previous three races before holding Two Phil’s in the long haul going 1 1/4 mile in 2:01.57 under Javier Castellano’s lead. The Hall of Fame equestrian skated 0 to 15 in the Derby. He and coach Gustavo Delgado are from Venezuela.

Houston furniture store owner and famous sports gambler Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale placed $1.2 million to win against Angel of Empire 9-2. McIngvale would have made $5.4 million in profit if Angel of Empire had won.

McIngvale’s bet helped make Angel of Empire the favorite with a score of 4-1. Before betting, Angel of Empire was a co-favorite with Tapit Trice at 9-2.

Exactly 2 dollars (8-3) paid 330.44 dollars. A $1 trio (8-3-14) pays $982.36. A $1 supermodel (8-3-14-11) paid $15,643.60.

Shaman earned $1.86 million. Second runner-up Phil’s earned $600,000 and Angel of Empire made $300,000 to show.

The 149th edition of the iconic event, also known as the “Fastest Two Minutes in Sports” and “Running for the Roses” – named after the carpet of roses presented to the winners, features 18 The horse vying for the coveted title.

Forte, the earliest favorite for this year’s competition, suffered a scratch a few hours before Saturday’s race due to concerns about a bruise on his right forefoot, according to Darren Rogers, a spokesman for Churchill Downs and co-owner Mike Repole.

The Derby is the most prestigious horse race in the world and the first leg of the sport’s Triple Crown races. Preakness 2023 will take place on May 20, followed by Belmont Staking 2023 on June 10.

The Triple Crown of equestrianism is considered one of the most difficult achievements in horse racing. Only thirteen horses have achieved this feat, with the last being Justify in 2018.

The $3 million race is for the top 3-year-olds.
