The Hyundai Ioniq 5 2022 looks different from all the rest, and at first glance it can get you hooked into a place where nostalgia meets the future.

The dual-engine models also have a heat pump — not offered on rear-wheel drive versions — and they use a dog clutch to separate the front engine to help maximize efficiency. It cuts the front engine during Eco mode startup, most of the time under low load in Normal mode and rarely in Sport mode. Steering is satisfying enough; it loads nicely and off-centre gives some feel of the road; systems such as those included in the Ioniq 5 make it easier to access its processing capabilities than in VW ID.4. But in the center, the Ioniq 5 steering wheel can feel like a dead rudder when you follow curves or different contours. We were curious to see if we would have liked the steering in the single-engine versions better.

At initial launch, all versions of the Ioniq 5 in the US will feature a larger battery — a 77.4 kWh pack with 384 SK Innovation pouches. But a base SE with a smaller 58 kWh pack and rear-wheel drive — weighing almost 4,000 lb — will arrive in spring 2022.

All models have dual 12.3 displays, one used as the instrument cluster, the other a touchscreen for navigation, entertainment and deeper settings. Now for a reality check and a moment of disappointment: Hyundai still won’t say that the Ioniq 5 is a 50-state car. It says it plans to sell the Ioniq 5 initially in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and Vermont — all ZEV states — plus Texas, Florida , Illinois, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Virginia and Washington.

That equates to an 18-state car — unlike the related EV6, which Kia has said will be 50 states in launch year. Hyundai says there will be a “wider rollout” of the Ioniq 5 in 2022, but it won’t provide any additional details on what that means.
