I’ve had about 13 Basset Hounds and I’ve learned that they don’t go well with high-protein foods. Just a well-balanced diet. My last basset with stomach issues did best on the Pedigree in the yellow pouch, but without the extra protein. Every dog is different. The key ingredient is figuring out why it’s food sensitive if possible. Best wishes to your dog.

I’ve been feeding my 16.5-year-old son Kirkland Salmon and Bassett Costco sweet potatoes for years. My Yorkie likes it better than salmon and sweet potatoes Nutrish kibble or Royal Canin, so I just let it keep eating its own. She’s 11 years old now and as healthy as she can be.

Mix one cup of skinless, hard-boiled, diced chicken breast with 1.5 cups of cooked white rice and 1.5 cups of Royal Canin low-fat food and about 3/4 cup of steamed mixed vegetables. Do not use sodium or spices. Cook the rice in the water left over when the chicken breasts are boiled. Our 12 year old basset has pancreatitis and this diet was recommended by our vet. (Royal Canin is available by prescription only.) He eagerly eats the whole mix every day and is feeling great now.

My Shirlee is physically very fragile. I’ve tried all sorts of ‘scientific-based’ or vet-recommended foods and they either don’t help or Miss Prissy doesn’t eat. One desperate night, I threw some Ken L Ration burgers at her and not only did she love it, but she didn’t have a stomach ache anymore. I was worried about it getting enough nutrition though, and more than one vet has said it’s perfectly fine. She thrived for another 14 years on it, so I guess.
