There’s no denying that looking to a glass of ice cold water in the summer to quench your thirst, or taking a cold shower to cool down after a smoldering day. But short of plugging your head into the freezer in mid-July, there’s no surefire way to cool down from the neck up right away. However, the beauty industry has never been left behind and the recent emergence of beauty products – eye cream, moisturizer and mask with ingredients like aloe, mint and menthol – ubiquitous. But do beauty products have a cooling effect? And if so, which investments are the best? We turned to the experts to find out.
“Some of the most popular ‘cooling’ products use cucumber, mint, menthol, eucalyptus, and aloe,” says dermatologist Corey L. Hartman. Founder of Skin Wellness Dermatology in Birmingham, Alabama. “The ingredients don’t lower your skin’s temperature; Instead, they work by creating a cellular response that sends signals to the nerves responsible for temperature regulation so that the skin doesn’t get hot, so it feels cooler.”
Clinical cosmetic chemist Joyce de Lemosco-founder most favorite beauty brand Dieuxreminds us that cooling products are by no means a new phenomenon: “In higher doses, they can be used therapeutically as in Vicks Vaporub or Biofreeze,” she says.
However, the basic principles of applying something cold to your hot skin still hold true: It will probably feel good. That’s why so many people turn to cryotherapy tools like rock rollworks by constricting blood vessels, minimizing redness, and reducing puffiness, says dermatologist Brian Hibler, who practices at Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City. “The benefits are most obvious when you’re hot or flushed, and they feel better when used during the warm summer months. They can be used to reduce puffiness under the eyes early in the morning; however, the effect on blood vessels may be temporary if you get warm and flushed again during the day.”
Still, he cautions against letting anything freeze on your face, lest you risk real damage to your skin: “It usually feels light when you put something chilled on your skin, but I wouldn’t apply anything frozen directly to my skin to reduce the risk of skin injury and discoloration. Instead, he recommends keeping your moisturizer or mask in the fridge, especially if you have dry skin. “The cooling effect can reduce the itching sensation.”
Fellow Dieux co-founder and SkinTok Legend Charlotte Palermino agreed – but with a caveat. “Some products may not be for the refrigerator, and it can change the texture,” says Palermino. However, “water-based products are very satisfying when applied cold, especially when it is hot. I like to keep my eye products in the fridge because it feels good – but not because it has a huge effect or benefit,” she said, referring to her use. Dieux’s Forever Eye Mask, a pair of silicone gel eye pads that can be reused after being refrigerated. “I combine it with a cold eye cream, then I roll some ice over the area for a little eye massage.”

Hibler recommends keeping this mask on hand to cool off on a hot summer day because “it contains selenium, a powerful antioxidant, is free of fragrances, preservatives, and is great for sensitive skin.”
Hibler recommends storing this hydrating gel bar, made with caffeine and sea water, in the refrigerator for an “enhanced cooling sensation”.
“This helps cool the face quickly when applied with its main ingredients cucumber, green tea and aloe,” says Hartman. “You can use it any time of day to help cool, or soothe, your face right before you apply your morning or evening moisturizer.”
“This pleasant mist is almost a moisturizer – perfect all day long this summer,” says Palermino.
“My favorite product is… water,” says de Lemos. “In the summer, I keep a small spray bottle filled with water in the fridge and mist myself when I go out. If I’m at the beach, I keep one in colder. ”
Menthol adds an invigorating cooling effect to this gel cleanser, gently exfoliating and toning with AHAs, red algae and sea kelp extracts.
Palermino doesn’t like products that activate cold receptors like menthol but instead recommends Deliverance because “my skin-calming and soothing ingredients stay in control so I don’t get irritated, which leads to sensation of heat, inflammation”.
Get rid of single-use masks, thanks to Dieux’s Forever Eye Mask, which is made to be used (and reused) for at least a year. Palermino (and nearly everyone else on TikTok) recommends keeping them in the fridge.
“This has a cooling effect on the skin by reducing TRPV1 receptor activation from environmental aggressors and contains hyaluronic acid for moisturizing,” says Hibler. In other words, it will help reduce puffiness under the eyes, skin irritation, and fine lines.
“Filled with nourishing ingredients like shea butter, vitamin E and vegetable oils, Younique Weekend Lip Butter delivers a hydrating and cooling effect on your lips,” says Hartman. Relaxing cooling without leaving sticky residue.
“I really like this mask for people with dry skin,” says Hartman. “Hyaluronic acid replenishes moisture in the skin, while cucumber, thyme and olive oil extracts soothe and cool the skin at the same time. It is also a good choice if you have a sunburn, as the dipeptide will reduce some of the heat on the skin. ”
“I also like to use ice cube machine Palermino said to people walking down the boulevard it was like an ice roller for my face,” says Palermino, who says it wakes her up like a second cup of coffee. “The skin around the eyes can benefit from using a cooling product to help reduce breakouts and look smoother,” says Hartman. “I love this product, as it has antioxidants to help protect against free radicals, niacinamide to reduce the appearance of dark circles, and hyaluronic acid to add moisture to the skin.”
Containing skin-soothing aloe and cucumber, this face and body spray soothes and cools skin while giving it a dewy look.
“When applied to the skin, this mask feels cooling and helps soothe inflamed acne-prone skin with extracts of eucalyptus, green tea, algae, and Irish moss,” says Hartman. “Salicylic acid and lactic acid loosen dead skin and sebum on the skin to unclog clogged pores.”
These two ingredients are fragrant and feel good on the skin, especially after you keep them in the fridge.
