For the sixth year in a row, the Maryland Jockey Club is offering bonuses totaling $100,000 to trainers who run a minimum of five horses in 15 Thoroughbred stake races during the Preakness weekend, May 20 and 21. 5, at the historical festival Pimlico racetrack.
The blockbuster weekend included a total of 16 shares, 10 shares classified, valued at US$3.8 million. The coach with the most points will receive $50,000, second $25,000, third $12,000, fourth $7,000, fifth $4,000, and sixth $2,000.
Points are accumulated when finishing first (10 points), second (seventh), third (five), fourth (third) and having a starter (one) out of 15 Purebred stakes, led by Co. 147th Preakness (G1), middle jewel of the Triple Crown, May 21.
Other classified events during Preakness Day are $250,000 Dinner Party Stake (G2), $150,000 Gallorette Stake (G3T) on the Lawn, $200,000 Chick Lang Stake (G3), $150,000 Maryland Sprint (G3) stake and $100,000 UAE Presidents Cup (G1) stake for Arabian horses on the main track. The UAE President’s Cup is not part of the prize money.
Supporting races under the Preakness card are a $100,000 Sir Barton Bonus for a 3-year-old who didn’t win a sweepstakes and a $100,000 Voting Skip, plus $100,000 James W. Murphy Stakes for 3-year-olds and $100,000 Jim McKay Turf Sprint Stakes on Grass.
Preakness Eve, May 20, will be marked by the 98th run of the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) $250,000 for 3-year-olds. Among the shares classified in support are the $300,000 Pimlico Special Shares (G3), the $150,000 Miss Preakness Stakes (G3) and the $150,000 Allaire du Pont Distaff Stakes (G3), all of is at a low level.
The Black-Eyed Susan undercard also includes $100,000 in Hilltop Stocks for 3-year-olds who ride a mile and $100,000 in The Very One Stakes for mares 3 years of age and older that sprints of 5, both on the course grass.
Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen was the top weekend bet coach at Preakness in 2018 and 2019, followed by Brad Cox in 2019 and Mike Maker in 2020. Asmussen overtook Maker to reclaim the top spot. in 2021.
