PALOS VERDES ESTATES, California – A man was killed and two women seriously injured when four people fell off a cliff in Southern California before dawn Monday, authorities said.
The fourth, a man with minor injuries, managed to climb back up from the beach below and alerted a passing officer around 4:30 a.m., Captain Steve Barber of the Palos Verdes Police Department Estates said.
A 25-year-old man from Los Angeles died at the scene, Barber said. Two women were brought on board from the beach and each was hospitalized in critical condition, he said.
Helicopter TV reports showed a Los Angeles County Fire Department helicopter hoisting one of the victims onto a rescue truck atop the cliff.
Police are investigating the event as an accident, Barber said.

Palos Verdes Estates is located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula at the southern end of Los Angeles County. A trail runs along the summit about 300 feet above the Pacific Ocean.
Barber said there have been a number of accidents in the area over the years, and a number of suicides.
“There is no indication that this was anything other than an accident,” he said.
