The mayor of Zhytomyr, Serhiy Sukhomlyn, told the BBC before the war, which had a population of around 280,000, was a key point in the logistical and humanitarian corridor. Aid from Europe is being routed to Kyiv and further east via Zhytomyr, and refugees are heading in the opposite direction.
