You can now redeem your Citi points at Walmart, but you probably shouldn’t

While we’re all gearing up for holiday purchases, the ThankYou redemption at Walmart offers an incredibly low redemption rate of just 0.8 cents per ThankYou point – that’s not even half Valuation of TPG.

This is why you should think twice before redeeming ThankYou points at the Walmart cash register.

Redeeming your ThankYou points for purchases at Walmart stores is easy and requires no pre-registration.

When you pay at a participating Walmart location with a purchase of $10.01 or more, swipe your Citi card at the cashier. If your store and purchase are eligible, then the terminal will say, “Redeem your ThankYou points?” and “Use 1,250 points for $10.”

It’s easy to be fooled and choose “yes”, resulting in a reward redemption of only a fraction of what you could get if you maximize your ThankYou points.

For example, the 12,500 ThankYou points needed to cover $100 of a Walmart purchase can be used to book a one-way ticket from New York to Berlin. Just switch destinations to Air France-KLM Flying Blue and take advantage of its November Promotional rewards to book this flight. You’ll even save 1,250 points if you go this route.

You can redeem ThankYou points at Walmart using any major Citi card that earns ThankYou points, including those that don’t charge an annual fee. This includes the following tags:

  • Citi® Double Cash.
  • Citi Rewards Card + ®.
  • Citi ThankYou Preferred Card (no longer available to new registrants).
  • CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® (no longer available for new subscribers).
  • Citi AT&T Access (no longer available to new subscribers).
  • Citi AT&T More Access (no longer available to new subscribers).
  • Citi AT&T Multi-Purpose Card (no longer available to new registrants).
  • Citi Sears Card.
