Xpeng G9 – Large electric SUV from RM200k in China

This is the Xpeng G9, the fourth EV from the Alibaba-backed Chinese carmaker in its lineup. It is also Xpeng’s second SUV, a larger model than the compact G3i it launched before.

Like so many high-end EVs, there are different combinations of motor and battery – a ‘standard’ range RWD model, a long range RWD model and a performance AWD model.

The standard RWD drivetrain doesn’t slip, it still hits 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds, quick thanks to the 308 hp, 439 Nm engine. The range is 570 km. Upgrade to the long-range RWD model and you have a range of up to 702 km.

The performance AWD model adds a 235 hp, 287 Nm electric motor up front. The combination of the two engines allows it to reach 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds.

Xpeng calls the G9 the world’s fastest charging EV. It says it can charge at up to 480 kW at the top of the charging curve.

Helping it get to that 480 kW speed is of course the 800V battery architecture, which we expect most (especially high-end) EV manufacturers to eventually migrate to.

How much does all of this cost? Prices start from 309,900 RMB (RM200k) in China for the standard model up to RMB 469,900 (RM300k) for the AWD 650X Launch Edition.

Will we ever see Xpeng in Malaysia? Born in China, driving left-handed, Xpeng seems to want to focus on the export market for left-handers from now on. With demand for EVs outstripping general supply, we think there’s no reason for Xpeng to bother with right-hand driving until it feels the LHD market is saturated.
