Woodbine Cancels Monday Card Due to Extreme Heat
Due to the extreme heat forecasted for the Toronto area Sept. 4, Woodbine has made the decision in consultation with the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association of Ontario and the commissioned veterinarian to cancel today’s live racing, the track announced Monday morning.
“The safety of the horses and all racing participants is always our top priority. Woodbine’s race office will endeavor to make up for the lost races over the next few race cards,” said a statement from the track.
The Canadian federal government issued a heat warning for the area due to maximum temperatures of 89-94 degrees Fahrenheit. The humidex value, which indicates the comfort level of heat and humidity, is expected to be around 40 and is associated with a caution against exertion with outdoor activities.
Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high risk category.
The hot and humid airmass is expected through Wednesday, with the hottest day expected Tuesday. Overnight lows will be in the high 60s and low 70s bringing little relief to the heat. A cold front is projected to end the heat wave Thursday.
Live racing at Woodbine is scheduled to return on Thursday, Sept. 7, post time 4:50 p.m.
