Women’s World Boxing C Championship: Anamika, Jaismine and Shiksha advance to the quarterfinals


The Indian boxers continued their impressive streak at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships as the trio of Anamika (50kg), Shiksha (54kg) and Jaismine (60kg) advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective events in Istanbul on Thursday. While Anamika overcame Romania’s Eugenia Anghel by unanimous decision to win the opening match, Shiksha also prevailed with a similar score of 5-0 against Herrera Milagros Rosario of Argentina.

The third Indian in the bout, Jaismine defeated the two-time Asian youth champion Porntip Buapa of Thailand with a decisive 4-1 goal.

Anamika showed her superior strength and technique against Anghel.

The fight got off to a hot start as both fighters relentlessly attacked from the top but Anamika showed off her sharp footwork and bodywork to deliver clear punches while dodging the opponent’s blows.

The boxer from Rohtak continued to attack relentlessly in the second round and did not let his opponent settle down. She read the terms throughout the entire round and comfortably won 5-0 to advance to the next round.

Anamika will next face World Championship bronze medalist Kristy Lee Harris of Australia in a round of 16 match on Sunday.

Shiksha put on a fiery performance as she entered the previous round.

The two boxers continuously attacked each other with high tempo but the Indian puncher was able to deliver clearer and sharper punches.

India’s final bout of the day started with anticipation as both boxers appeared cautious but Jaismine went above and beyond as she struggled to deliver clear punches and tight defence. . Buapa almost could not touch the Indian boxer in the first round.

Jaismine then dominated the round with his counter punches to finally claim his place in the round of 16.

Two-time Asian champion Pooja Rani (81kg) and Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain (70kg) will compete in the round of 16 respectively on Friday.

Pooja, who will begin his campaign, will face Hungary’s Timea Nagy while Lovlina will face Fair Chance Team’s Cindy Ngamba.

Lovlina defeated former world champion Chen Nien-Chin in the first round on Monday.

Late on Wednesday, Saweety (75kg) took on England’s Kerry Davis and lost 2-3.

In the final edition of the tournament, held in Russia in 2019, the Indian boxers won one silver and three bronze medals.
