Winner: Picfair’s Urban Wildlife Competition

Andrew Interisanoa digital advertising specialist and an amateur photographer, won PicfairUrban Wildlife Photography Award. Scroll to see all the winners in the category! Please note, all Picfair profits from winning sales will go to the global conservation nonprofit. Re: Wild.

Interisano captured the winning photo when he found himself caught between the howls and cries of two packs of coyotes. Interisano attempted to create a powerful image of one coyote caught in the light and another in the distance, backlit, almost a glowing negative version of a coyote.

Winners were selected from more than 6,000 entries by Philip Mowbray, Picfair’s head of content, and a panel of wildlife photographers and writers, including Melissa Groo, Andrew Budziak, Will Burrard-Lucas and Florence Wilkinson. Referring to the winner, Groo noted:

The composition and mood of this photo is amazing. I love the game between light and shadow, and the wolf’s eerie, almost sinister glowing eyes in the dark. Even before you read the caption, you probably know that there’s a story going on here. And I appreciate the photographer’s desire – after he’s captured a few frames – to put down the camera and fully experience a truly special, wild moment.

Winners in the Nightlife category: Austin MonteroLife Beyond the Sewer

For Montero, the pandemic forced him to stay in a small town in Mexico. That leads him to find animals that use different areas of the city, shelter under bridges, move through aqueducts or nest along roads.

Winners in the daylight category: Mano AliczkiWindow to the Salt Pan

And, since I’m a Toronto guy, the winner of the Fancy See You Here category, Trash Panda, from Jill Finney

Finney has dreamed of photographing wildlife since he was a kid and only started shooting seriously at the age of almost 50, during the COVID lockdown. Well done, Finney!

There are two other finalist images that immediately caught my eye:

Susi RyanWren and Chipmunk. I love the way they seem to be racing.

It was a fun contest. I’m glad to see Picfair endorsing Re:Wild. As we move further and further into wildlife habitats, as our cities grow in density, we will have to find ways to live with our friends.

Picfair Powers over half a million photographic catalogs around the world. Picfair’s free store builder allows amateur and professional photographers to price and sell their images in a variety of formats.

All images are credited to the winner. Led image by Interisano.
