Why you need a super zoom lens

Superzoom lenses are a relatively new option for photographers to add to their arsenal, and although derided at first, many are using them as a great all-round option.

When I clicked on this video, I did so to hear outside of my echo chamber. As far as I can remember, I have no interest or affection for superzoom lenses. Before they could reach the extent they are now, the closest options were near-wide at their widest and mid-telephoto at their widest zoom. These lenses are often referred to (at least in some communities of which I am a member) as walking lenses; lens you can throw in your camera when you’re out for the day and cover most of what you need.

I’ve tried them many times, I even own one (or two?) and they just don’t do it for me. I’m usually disappointed with the results and in most cases don’t require me to change from 35mm to 150mm in less than 10 seconds, they feel like half-measurement Mike Ehrmantraut warned us.

Well, now the lens brand has been pushed to the extreme with “superzoom” lenses; I can point out the absurdity frankly, Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD? The USP is of course versatility, extending not only to what you can shoot but also to a number of lenses you can take with you if you want. But is it worth it? Well, Tony and Chelsea Northrup believe so; what do you think?
