Why Taylor-Serrano is such a big deal
By: Sean Crose
In an age where everything is a HUGE VIEW and/or HISTORY OF SERVICE, it can sometimes be difficult to discern when a legitimate event of note has actually occurred. That shouldn’t be the case when it comes to Katy Taylor-Amanda Serrano’s undisputed lightweight championship battle Saturday at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Yes, this is the first boxing tournament at the famous New York arena to feature two female fighters… but that’s not what will put this weekend’s fight in the annals of boxing history. . What makes Saturday’s main event important is that the two fighters competing are both female boxing legends. Any two fighters, male or female, can head a card. A card that is featured by legitimate martial artists is another story altogether.
And, make no mistake about it, 35-year-old Taylor and 33-year-old Serrano are masters of the fighting game. Taylor 20-0 isn’t just an Olympic Gold Medalist, she’s won world titles in two weight classes. As for Serrano 42-1-1, she won the world championship in 7, i.e. 7, weight class. It’s the kind of resume that needs no explanation. What makes this match even more exciting is the fact that it is difficult to say who will actually win. Taylor may have been favored entering, but there’s no guarantee the Irish star will walk out of the ring with his belt pulled.
While it’s true that neither Taylor nor Serrano can be said to be the “greatest” female singles boxer in history, or even today (I personally think that honor goes to Claressa Shields), the two warriors are still great athletes, ranked among the best of this generation…at least (and there’s no doubt that this is a great generation of female boxers.) Taylor and Serrano , quite simply, have captured the attention they’re getting at the moment. In other words, it’s well worth it.
And so, when the opening bell rings in front of New York City’s packed crowds on Saturday night, viewers on DAZN or in the Garden itself can rest assured that they’re actually watching a piece of rights history. older brother. It’s no small thing – something Taylor and Serrano seem to be well aware of themselves. Watching them practice, one understands the level of discipline really required to function at the top of the sport. Expect every woman to be at her best on battle night. Yet another reason to tune in.
