There’s a lot of blame for the Giants’ woes this season, and on Tuesday, the team finally chose a scapegoat in firing offensive coordinator Jason Garrett after 26 games on the job.

Garrett arrived in New York before starting last season as offensive coordinator but has been very familiar with the NFC East for much of the past decade. Just before coming to East Rutherford, Garrett spent 10 years as head coach of the Cowboys from 2011 to 2019 and scored 85-67 with three NFC East championships but never made it past the squad.

A graduate of Princeton, Garrett served as offensive coordinator in Dallas from 2007 to 2010 before being appointed head coach.

Despite good offensive coordination in the past, Garrett’s time in New York was less stellar and came to the fore after the team’s 30-10 loss to Tampa Bay on Monday night.

Over 10 games this year, some aspects of the bug have improved, albeit only slightly. So far, the Giants rank 25th in points and 23rd in total yards. The team also improved as conversion rates fell third, up to 37.3 percent, and 24th in the league. However, the Giants’ biggest offensive woes continue to be in the red zone, where Garrett’s unit ranks last in the league, scoring only 44.4% of attempts in the red zone.

Many expected that another former head coach – Freddie Kitchens of Cleveland – would take over Garrett’s role and take on the title of interim offensive coordinator.

Kitchens went 6-10 during a season as head coach with the Browns in 2019. Last season, he was the team’s offensive coordinator and the Browns placed 13th in yards and 20th in points.
