Most of us are aware of the fact that we shouldn’t give our dogs chocolate. Doing so can be harmful or even deadly. Looks like coffee might be on the same list.
There’s a lot of caffeine in an average cup of coffee and it’s too much for dogs to handle. Of course, you have to consider your dog’s size and whether they’ll only take a few sips out of your cup or can they drink a full liter.
Provence report that caffeine has a lethal dose if a dog takes 150 mg for every 2.2 pounds of body weight. An average cup of brewed coffee has 100 mg of caffeine.
If you drink decaffeinated coffee, you can share the coffee cup with your pet.
Caffeine poisoning is a very serious problem and it doesn’t happen immediately. It can take several hours before signs and symptoms start to appear.
Some of those symptoms can be inconvenient, but others, such as tremors, fast heartbeat, restlessness, and vomiting, can be more worrisome. Your dog may even have a seizure, which is a quick trip to the vet.
If it is determined that your dog has caffeine poisoning, the best thing you can do is induce vomiting. This should only be done if your dog has consumed a lot of caffeine.
If they just accidentally drink a few of your drinks, your veterinarian may choose to give them some anticonvulsant medication or medication to keep their blood pressure lower.
Along with those medications, your dog may need to be sedated until the symptoms pass.
Caffeine isn’t just found in coffee, you can get it in many different forms. It could be in your tea bag from your morning tea or in those diet pills you’ve saved up for your New Year’s tackle.
The best thing is that you keep caffeine away from your dog, or better yet, buy some high-quality dog food for your furry friend and feed them only that food.
